Jalswarajya Department :     

Government of Maharashtra is implementing Jalswarajya Project with credit from the world bank. It is scaled up to the reform initiatives in the rural water supply and sanitation sector of the state. The capacity building and infrastructure support under the project covers over 3400 grampanchayats in 26 districts. The project is being implemented in three successive batches of grampanchayats and tribal (indigenous people) settlements during a 5-year period beginning from October 2003 to September 2009.


Strengthening of the panchayat  raj institutions is one of the major object of the project. Zilla parishad  and village panchayat has the key roles in implementation of this project. At the state level, a multi disciplinary team of experts.Under the water supply and sanitation department Operation and Monitoring Team (OMT) established to guide and monitor this project. At district level district water management and sanitation committee (DWMSC) is a committee of the zilla parishad  which is  responsible for project implementation.The committee has assisted by three expert teams as mentioned below.
District Facilitation Team (DFT),
District Appraisal and Monitoring Team (DAMT) and
District Financial Management Team (DFMT).

At village level gram sabha has rights of decision-making. A village water supply and sanitation Committee (VWSC) constituted by the gram sabha as a committee of the village panchayat. It execute project activities. The village panchayat co-ordinates and monitor for successful implementation of the project.

Jalswarajya Project Started in District from July 2004. 146 villages which were suffering from water scarcity were selected for the project by objective point based criteria. Many of these villages were tanker fed. Out of these, 23 were selected in phase 1 and remaining in phase 2. Water supply has started in 122 of these villages. The project is scheduled to be completed in March 2009.
