    Gram Panchayat Department

    Introduction

    Gram Panchayat Department is one of the important departments of the Zilla Parishad. Important schemes like Maharashtra Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) and Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (Swachh Bharat Mission) are implemented under the Gram Panchayat Department. Also, the establishments of Extension Officer (Panchayat), Extension Officer (Social), Village Development Officer and Gram Sevak cadre are also maintained by the department.

    The Central Government has enacted the 73rd Constitutional Amendment to enable Gram Panchayats to become self-reliant and to have the power to manage their affairs as autonomous institutions. According to this amendment, Gram Panchayats have been given constitutional status. The journey of Gram Panchayats is continuing towards providing social justice to the people of the villages and their economic development.

    Various schemes are being implemented by the Central Government for the overall development of the country. In order to ensure that the benefits of development schemes reach the people at the grassroots level and ensure their upliftment/progress, powers have been given to the Zilla Parishad, Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayats by decentralizing power.

    Objectives and Tasks

    • Management of funds for the empowerment of Gram Panchayats.
    • Planning and implementation of Gram Sabha and Gram Panchayat activities.
    • Implementing various schemes through Panchayat Samiti.
    • Training and guidance of Sarpanch, Upasarpanch, members.
    • Responsibility for the establishment and administrative work of Extension Officers, Rural Development Officers, Gram Sevaks.
