Animal Husbandry Department
Introduction
Latur district is a drought prone and partly plateau region. For rural farmers, small landholders, labourers and families below the poverty line, dairy farming is an important livelihood source. Due to rapid urbanisation, the demand for milk has increased significantly. The Animal Husbandry Department prepares timely plans to promote dairy farming, goat rearing and poultry farming.
In the district, Deoni and indigenous cow breeds are reared on a large scale along with crossbreeds. Marathwadi and Surti are major buffalo breeds known for good milk yield. The Animal Husbandry Department under Zilla Parishad Latur implements various services and schemes for livestock farmers in rural areas. The department aims to promote economic development of livestock keepers in drought affected Latur district by encouraging dairy, goat and poultry farming. Animal Husbandry Day is celebrated on 20 May.
