Latur district is a drought-prone and partly plateau region. For rural farmers, small landholders, laborers, and families below the poverty line, dairy farming is a crucial livelihood. Due to rapid urbanization, the demand for milk has increased significantly. The Animal Husbandry Department has developed timely plans to promote dairy farming, goat rearing, and poultry farming.
In the district, Devani and indigenous cow breeds are reared on a large scale, along with some crossbreeds. Marathwadi and Surti are the major buffalo breeds known for good milk yield. The Animal Husbandry Department under Zilla Parishad Latur implements various services and schemes for livestock farmers in rural areas. The department aims to promote economic development of livestock keepers in drought-affected Latur district by encouraging dairy, goat, and poultry farming. Animal Husbandry Day is celebrated on May 20.
