Location : Latur district is situated in the south-eastern part of the Maharashtra state. Latur town is situated on the 18.7° latitude and 73.25°longitude. It is situated 636 meters above sea level. The entire district of Latur is situated on the Balaghat plateau, 540 to 638 meters from the mean sea level.

A- It is situated in the Marathawada part of the Maharashtra state. It lies between 18.05º and 18.7º north latitude and 73.25º and 77.25º east longitude.

B- Boundaries : The district is situated on the Maharashtra Karnataka boundary. On the eastern side of the Latur is Bidar district of Karnataka, whereas Nanded is on the northeast, Parbhani on the northern side, Beed on the northwest and Osmanabad on the western and southern side.

C- Area : Latur district consist of 10 tahsils/Panchayat Samitees, 5 cities/towns/municipal councils, 787 gram panchayats & 945 revenue villages. Area of Latur district is 7,157 sq.km.

D- Climate and Rainfall: From mid of June rain starts & ends on the end of October, winter season starts from November & ends on February & summer season starts on March & ends on mid of June. Air remains humid in rainy season, in winter dry & cold & in summer remains dry & hot. Average rainfall is 801.04 mm. In Latur district south-west monsoon gives rain.

E- Temperature : Average minimum temperature is 11.9ºc & maximum temperature is 38.9ºc

F- Seasons : Three seasons, Hot weather from March to May, Rainy period from June to September, cold weather from October to February.

G- Means of livelihood : Most of the people depends on agriculture, dairy farm, sugar factories and other industries. It has been well known for its food grain trade and oil mills.

H- Educational Background : Latur is one of the educationally advanced district of the state. There are many educational and technical institutes. Recently, it has evolved as an education centre, primarily for secondary and higher secondary education. Latur Pattern is a phrase that recently evolved in Latur. Latur Pattern has emerged as a gold standard for secondary and higher secondary education in Maharashtra. This technique of education has been widely adopted in other places due to its consistent and successful track record of excellent results. The emphasis is more on completing the course-work early in the year  and then focusing on practicing for the examinations. The professors are not just teachers, but also coaches, who take personal interest in each and every student and adapt the teaching style and practice examination regimen as per the capability of the students to cope. The Latur pattern is now growing to rest of the state.

I- Transportation and communication : The Latur district is connected with major cities and towns of the state with roads and railways. State highways connect the city of Latur with Nanded-Nagpur, Solapur, Barshi-Pune-Mumbai, Omerga-Hyderabad, etc. Direct train services are available for Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, etc. Latur also has an airport with triweekly commercial flights to Mumbai in addition to private flights.

J- Historical Background : This city has a historical background. Earlier names of Latur in historical literature are Lattalur and Ratnapur. King 'Amoghvarsha' of Rashtrakutas developed this city, originally the native place of the Rashtrakutas. Latur city has the famous 'Ganjgolai' as the central place of the city.

The town planner Shri Faiyajuddin prepared the plan for the 'Ganjgolai Chowk'. The main building of the Golai is a huge  two-storeyed structure which was constructed around the year 1917. In the middle of the circular structure is the temple of Goddess Ambabai. There are 16 roads connecting  to this Golai In 1960, with the creation of Maharashtra, it became one of its districts. On August 15, 1982, Latur was separated from Osmanabad to form a separate Latur district. Latur has temples dedicated to Siddheshwar, Ramlingeshwar, Papivinash Bhuteshwar, Ram, Keshavaraj Datta and Ambabai.
